Asper TR Special Down Under

When the historic Alta race car chassis and engine builder Goeff Taylor set out to create one of the most unique “One Off” race cars many say he accomplished his goal. Goeff had many accomplishments with racing especially overhead cam motors. At one time Sterling Moss raced one of Geoff’s Alta’s giving them much needed exposure.
The year was 1957. A friend of Goeffs, Harry Firth the historic race car driver and builder just flipped his Triumph TR over at Fishermen’s Bend. It is said that Harry later donated that car to his friend Geoff Taylor and assisted in building the “One Off” Asper TR Special.
The Super Charged Asper TR Special was born.
The car spent its early years being campaigned successfully by Taylor around Tasmania and Brisbane Australia. Spending much time at Sandown and other tracks.
In 1962 the now famous Goeff Munyard of Hobart was building a name for himself around multiple racing circuits. At the time he was racing Formula cars in Europe and Australia. Goeff Munyard was intrigued with the Asper TR that was spending much of its time in winning circles at many venues. Geoff Munyard was able to purchase the Asper TR from Taylor. Geoff Munyard raced the Asper TR around the continent successfully. Some of the most notable races were for example: 1962 Longford BP. He raced against, just to name a few, Bob Jane Team Maserati with his 300S Spyder, Greg Cusack of Scuderia Veloce with his Lola. This is the same team Jackie Stewart was racing for at that time. Frank Matich of Team Lotus and Doug Whiteford Team Aston. Racing his now famous DB4GT Zagato.

Goeff Munyard spent approximately 7 years campaigning his Super Charged TR.
During that time Pete Brock was racing around the same circuits. Harry Firth was courting Pete join MWM/Holden Team Racing. Goeff Munyard was friends with Pete Brock and raced with him from time to time in one of his A30’s
.
Sandown February 1968, Harry Firth remembered the Asper TR Special that Munyard was racing. He recalled the car from when it was being built. Pete Brock was sent out on the track to give Munyard a little competition. “See Log Book” It was said that Pete Brock came in after the race with his tail between his legs. Munyard with the Asper TR Special was just to fast.
From the history of the Asper TR each year was exciting. 1969 was a special year for the Asper Triumph. It was Sunday February 16th Sandown Sport Car Challenge. All the big names of that era were participating. Graham Hill, Jochen Rindt, Chris Amon, Derek Bell, Staurt Anderson, Geoff Munyard, Peter Brock and Doug Whiteford to name just a few. Brock, Muyard and Whiteford were running in the 2001-3000cc class.
The TR Special spent the rest of its life racing around Australia until in 2008 two Philadelphia vintage racers and collectors purchased the TR Special and brought it to the US to start another leg of its journey.
